General Characteristics
Raccoons are easily recognized, with a prominent black mask
over their eyes and a furry ringed tail. Their bodies have
a salt-and-pepper gray and black mixture of fur, and they
range from 2 to 3 feet in length. Five long rear toes and
hand-like front footprints are characteristic of raccoon tracks.
Biology and Habits
Raccoons are omnivorous, meaning they eat a wide variety of
food, including insects, frogs, fish, ground-nesting bird
eggs, fruit, seeds, and worms. They are nocturnal, meaning
they are active at night, and they do not hibernate. Raccoons
usually nest in hollow trees and burrows. They breed mainly
in February or March, and they produce one litter per year.
About 4 babies are born in April or May.
